- Why You'll Love It: This Ground Beef Philly Skillet is the PERFECT family-friendly, macro-friendly meal to make on a weeknight. My fam LOVES it, and it only takes about 30 minutes to make!
It’s super versatile and easy to fit in your macros because you can serve it so many different ways. My family loves it on a toasted bun, but it’s just as good tucked into a sweet potato or piled over simple roasted spaghetti squash. No matter how you serve it… it’s a hit!
Fun fact: this was one of the first recipes that wasn’t from my Instagram or cookbooks. I launched it only in my meal plan subscription. It’s fresh, yummy, and doesn’t take all day in the kitchen.
Can a Philly Cheesesteak Be Made with Ground Beef?
YES! Ground beef gives you all the Philly cheesesteak flavor without slicing steak paper thin. It browns fast, soaks up the Worcestershire and garlic, and turns this into a skillet you can make any night of the week.
What Seasoning Is Used for Philly Cheesesteak Meat?
I keep it simple: salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic. The Worcestershire is the secret ingredient. It’s tangy and savory and makes the ground beef taste like a real cheesesteak.
Is This Philly Cheesesteak Skillet Gluten-Free?
It is, as long as you grab a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce. If you’re eating it on a bun, use a gluten-free bun too. Here’s my go-to gluten-free product list for some of my fav swaps. Or skip the bun and pile it on spaghetti squash, a bed of greens, or your favorite gluten-free carb.
Need it dairy-free? Skip the cheese at the end or swap in your favorite dairy-free cheese. I keep a quick list of my favorite dairy-free products for easy reference.

Important Ingredients and Substitutions
- 96/4 extra lean ground beef: I buy mine at Sprouts and it’s labeled 4.5g fat per 4 oz. If you use a higher fat option and track your macros, you’d be pretty safe to manually add the difference in fat (for a 4 oz portion) to your macro-counting app.
- Worcestershire sauce: the secret ingredient that makes the beef taste like a cheesesteak. Use a gluten-free one if you need it.
- Mushrooms: I use white mushrooms, but baby bellas work too.
- Red, orange, or yellow bell pepper: I prefer these over green peppers since they’re much sweeter.
- Cheese: provolone, sharp white cheddar, or mozzarella. Freshly grated is best for taste and meltiness!
- Frozen garlic cubes: always my preference, but minced garlic works too.

Before You Start Cooking
- Grab a large, heavy skillet. Everything cooks in one pan over high heat, so you want room to push the veggies aside and brown the beef.
- Do your chopping first. Slice the mushrooms and pepper and dice the onion before you turn on the heat. A sharp knife and a good cutting board make it go fast.
- Sneaking mushrooms past the kids? Pulse them in the food processor until they’re nice and crumbly. They blend right in with the ground beef. I cook mine down pretty good if I have any chance of getting them past my boys.
- Plan for about 30 minutes. That’s 10 minutes of prep and 20 minutes of cooking.
- Weigh your empty skillet if you track macros. One serving is 234g, a quarter of the skillet. Here’s how I add a recipe to MyFitnessPal.
How to Make a Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak Skillet
- Start the mushrooms. Heat the skillet over high heat, spritz with olive oil, and let it heat for a minute. Add the mushrooms with half the salt and the pepper and cook for 3 minutes.
- Add the peppers and onions. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often, until the veggies are fragrant and tender.
- Brown the beef. Push the veggies to one side, add the ground beef and the remaining salt, and break it up with a meat masher or wooden spoon until it’s browned and cooked through.
- Season. Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic and cook for about 2 minutes. Add more salt and pepper to taste.
- Melt the cheese. Turn off the heat, top with the grated cheese, and cover until it’s melty.

What to Serve with a Philly Cheesesteak Skillet
For the meal plan, we served this with quick mustard aioli on a toasted brioche bun. Perfection! If you’re keeping your carbs low, enjoy it over a bed of greens, with chopped lettuce like a taco salad, tucked in a sweet potato, or over cauliflower rice. A baked potato or rice works great too. The options are endless.
It’s still one of our favorites from the meal plan. If you want a plan for the whole week, my macro-friendly meal plans send you a new high-protein, family-friendly menu and a categorized grocery list every Thursday, with the macros already done. You can try it free.
On the side, we love oven roasted fries, feta parsley potato wedges, a simple house salad, or carrot slaw. If you love a one-pan dinner, try my fajita ground turkey skillet or zucchini corn chicken skillet next.

How to Freeze a Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak Skillet
This one is on my list of macro-friendly freezer meals because the filling freezes and reheats so well.
- Freeze just the filling, not on buns.
- Let it cool, then portion into freezer bags or containers and label with the date and grams (one serving is 234g).
- Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat in a skillet over medium heat.
- Pile it on a toasted bun, a baked potato, or spaghetti squash, and melt a little extra cheese on top if you like!
- Keeps up to 3 months.
Want more ground beef dinners for the freezer? Try my classic taco meat, beef and veggie shell pasta, or skillet zucchini lasagna. For more ground beef recipes, my Korean beef bowl, easy beef and veggie soup, and beef and kale soup are all family favorites.
